Submarine SMASH Day Reflection

1.For SMASH day, we first discussed submarines and periscopes. Our mission was to build a periscope to spot the items in a box on the table. Our heads were not aloud above the table (water.) Our supplies were ten sheets of scrap white paper, some cardboard (out of a Scholastic's box,) one meter of Scotch tape, and four mirrors.
2.We had to modify our design approximately three or four times. We knew we should modify our design when we looked through the hole, for example, and could not see the object at the top we had used to test it. Other examples include when the cardboard wasn't quite long enough or the pieces didn't fit together. When we couldn't see anything through the 'periscope,' Mrs. Smith suggested that we angle one of our mirrors. That worked slightly better.
3. I would tell them that they would need to try a few designs to get it to work out. I would also tell them that angling mirrors helps with seeing the objects in the box.
